Leaky tank removed

A leaking underground diesel tank used to heat the Cromwell Memorial Hall has been removed along with 19 tonnes of contaminated soil.

The Central Otago District Council was waiting to get certification for an above-ground tank to replace it, CODC property manager Mike Kerr said.

The cost would be "significantly less" than the $60,000 allocated by the Cromwell Community Board.

Earlier this year, it was discovered the underground tank had leaked 1000 litres of diesel into the ground, and would have to be removed and replaced, along with some surrounding earth.

Mr Kerr said testing showed the site, near Lake Dunstan, was now clear of contaminants.
