Police have spoken to the driver involved in a car crash on a remote Otago bridge last week and charges are being considered.
Last Monday, police received a report of a burnt-out, mangled car wreck discovered on State Highway 87 at Kokonga, near Ranfurly, after another motorist came across the crash early in the morning.
The occupants of the car were nowhere to be found and the car was so badly damaged police could not readily identify its make or registration.
Yesterday, Detective Sergeant Derek Shaw, of Central Otago CIB, confirmed police had located the car's driver.
''The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, has been located and interviewed,'' he said.
''Police are treating this matter as a single vehicle crash.
''Driving charges are being considered and investigations are ongoing.''
The car was found ploughed into the railings of a bridge on the highway and destroyed by fire.
Det Sgt Shaw said police did not believe the fire was suspicious.
''The car was burnt out as a result of a fire that police are satisfied was caused by the crash,'' he said.
A section of State Highway 87, about 20km from Ranfurly, was closed for much of last Monday following the discovery of the crash, as investigators worked at the scene.
