Killer dog destroyed in Alexandra

A dog which killed another dog in the residential Bridge Hill area of Alexandra earlier this month has been destroyed.

The bull mastiff or pit bull-mastiff cross mauled and killed a Tibetan terrier on August 15 during a prolonged attack which was witnessed by three people who tried to separate the pair.

Central Otago District Council planning and environment manager Louise van der Voort said the mastiff's Dunedin owner agreed to surrender the dog to the council so it could be put down.

The owner was fined $500 for failing to keep the dog under control and for not registering the pet.

Ms van der Voort said the owner was remorseful and had volunteered to pay for any material costs associated with the incident such as ripped or damaged clothing.

No-one was injured in the attack.

The council would not pursue prosecution, as the favourable outcome would have been to have the dog destroyed anyway, Ms van der Voort said.

Dog attacks are not common in Central Otago, particularly those resulting in death or serious injury.
