Injured cyclist keen to ride again

A promising young Alexandra road cyclist, recovering in Dunedin Hospital after a high-speed crash on Tuesday, is itching to get back on his bike.

Ryan MacKay (16) broke his pelvis and several ribs after failing to take a corner on Conroys Rd.

He was travelling at 60kmh and fell about 6m, rolling on to rock, his father John MacKay said from Dunedin yesterday.

"He's pretty banged up but is going to be all right, so he's very very lucky."

Ryan will be in traction for 3 weeks and it will probably be 8 to 10 weeks before he will be back on a bike.

"Funnily enough, he was saying today all he wants to do is to ride his bike," Mr MacKay said.

Ryan is a member of the Dunstan High School road-cycling team and was a promising young cyclist, the manager of the school cycle team, Alan Hamilton said.

"He's a cyclist with a great future and he's performing well at national level. We'd been expecting him to have a good season this year. It's nice to know that he's going to be OK," Mr Hamilton said.
