Local resident Ken Gillespie said the ice was not thick enough for skating and he was worried about people visiting the site and throwing stones on to the dam to see if the ice was safe.
The large stones melted into the ice and later caused havoc for skaters and curlers, he said.
However, he doubted there would be a bonspiel this year as it was too late to get a really thick ice cover.
Yesterday's frosts of -7degC frost at Oturehua and -6.3degC at Ophir barely raised an eyebrow in the two towns.
"We did have a -11degC and a -12degC a few weeks ago so this is nothing really," Oturehua Tavern owner Carol Millar said.
There had been no issues with burst pipes or icy roads.
Sam Leask, who records the temperatures at Ophir, was interviewed on national radio about the cold yesterday, telling listeners the frosty conditions were not a patch on the record -21.4degC recorded in the town on July 3, 1995.
Temperatures at Alexandra fell to -7.1degC yesterday and -7.3degC on Tuesday.
