Coming home is always a highlight for Highlanders player Josh Timu, but his next trip will be even more special.

As part of the Highlanders Regional Roadshow the team will be travelling through Central Otago, Wanaka and the Maniototo next week to give residents the opportunity to meet and interact with the team.

Timu grew up in Wanaka and it was definitely his home despite attending secondary school in Dunedin. He heads back there every summer.

"It was a pretty epic place to grow up; a cool community," he said.

His rugby career began there and he returned to play with the premier team last year.

"It all just fell into line and it was pretty epic to go back and play for the home team."

The Highlanders’ theme this year was getting into the community and making an effort to connect with local fans, which were a massive part of why they played, he said.

This trip was all about getting to fans who might not be able to get to games in Dunedin.

They would train in a different town every day and hopefully people would come down, watch and meet the players afterwards, Timu said.

The Highlanders Roadshow was being made in conjunction with Alexandra company Breen Construction.

Breen’s manager director, Lindsay Breen, said his company was stoked to be part of the Highlanders Central Otago Roadshow connecting the Highlanders team to the people around them.

"It gives us the opportunity to give something back to our team and the community that support us throughout each year."
