Jim Harrington and his wife Helen, of Cromwell, have first-hand knowledge of what it is like moving to a country far removed from the New Zealand lifestyle.

Mr and Mrs Harrington spent 10 years in the Sahara Desert in Malawi as missionaries for World Outreach, teaching Christianity and working on disaster relief projects.

A milk powder programme for children is still operating in Malawi after being set up by the Harringtons. It is funded by the Cromwell Presbyterian Church.

While the Harringtons were in Malawi, fellow missionaries Malcolm and Sandy Potter, who were then living in Cromwell, worked hard to raise funds to support their programme.

Mr and Mrs Harrington are now returning the favour by helping out the Potters who are working with the youth of Chiang Mai at Mae Chaem, in northern Thailand.

The Harringtons have organised Cromwell's second charity ball for Saturday, August 16, to help raise funds for the Tribal Youth Centre in Mae Chaem.

Mr Harrington said if last year's inaugural ball was any indication, they should be able to collect more than the $4500 they raised from that event.

Last year, the money raised went to start a fund to replace a vehicle for the Young family working in Malawi.
