Hearings soon on plan

The Central Otago District Council is likely to consider submissions on its controversial district plan changes later this year.

The council's hearing panel will make a decision on the 23 changes proposed to address rural development issues.

The changes would exclude Oamaru stone as a suitable building material and also include restrictions on colours to be used for rural homes.

As well, they introduce extra restrictions on where rural houses can be built.

Under the new rules, rural buildings and structures should not protrude on to the skyline or above a ridgeline when viewed from any public place.

The changes, which took effect as soon as they were advertised on October 11 last year, attracted more than 200 submissions.

Further comment on the submissions closed at 5pm yesterday, but the total would not be known until Monday at the earliest, council planning manager Louise van der Voort said.

"Then we'll prepare a report on the submissions and schedule a hearing to hear from the submitters and further submitters," Ms van der Voort said.
