POolice are reminding people about host responsibility after they say dozens of teenagers were left to find their own way home at the end of a party held several kilometres from Alexandra.
About 70 to 80 teenagers attended the party on Saturday night at a Hillview Rd house, Sergeant Derek Ealson said. Police were called when the party ended at midnight and the party-goers failed to leave the property.
It was good that adults were supervising the party but hosts also needed to consider the safety of party-goers getting home, Sgt Ealson said. Some of the guests chose to walk home, back to Alexandra. As it was in a country area, there was no street lighting and the nearby road had a 100km speed limit.
''Two 15-year-old girls were grossly intoxicated and after they left the party, police found them lying on the side of the road, on the grass, next to an open highway, in the dark, which was an accident waiting to happen. We were concerned about their safety and took them home.''
Sgt Ealson said there was no disorder at the party and no drink-drivers, which was pleasing, but police were concerned about how party guests would get home. Some had sober drivers or arranged lifts but others chose to walk, even though it was several kilometres into town.
Part of the responsibility of party hosts was ensuring guests got safely home, he said.
