Promoters of walking and cycling tracks beside the Clutha River in two different parts of Central Otago have appealed to the Clutha Management Committee for support.
At its meeting yesterday, the committee discussed an approach by the Cromwell and District Community Trust about a Cromwell to Clyde track, and a separate request from the Alexandra Business Group about a proposed 3km track in their town.
Chairman Gordon Stewart said the committee agreed to act as an agent so the trust could get funding from another source for a feasibility study.
The trust had a costing of $73,490 for the study. The committee suggested it should seek other estimates.
The Otago Regional Council and Vincent and Cromwell Community Boards have said they supported the proposal but declined to fund the study.
The business group asked for $5000 to be set aside every year in the annual plan for maintenance of an Alexandra track, but the committee suggested a trust should be set up to deal with maintenance of track ventures.
"We're a bit nervous about committing to funding ongoing maintenance work, when it's the ratepayers that will pay for it," Mr Stewart said.
