The Wanaka Bowling Club recently renovated its green, laying an allweather artificial surface and an official opening will be held tomorrow, from 2pm.
Mr Hurley said the new all-weather surface would cut down on the amount of maintenance and costs to the club, compared with the old grass greens.
The club had also increased the size of the playing surface to 36m square from the old greens of 33.5m square.
This drew it closer in line to Bowls New Zealand preferred standards, he said.
Wanaka Bowling Club president Colin Nyenhuis said the new surface cost $250,000 to lay.
Community grants totalling $165,000, were successfully applied for, while the $85,000 shortfall was raised by club members, donations, and various fund-raising initiatives, he said.
Mr Hurley, who has been playing bowls for 20 years and kept the greens for the past decade, said the new playing surface would enable bowls to be played year-round with little greens preparation ‘‘apart from a vacuum every now and then''.
The new all-weather artificial surface would also be more attractive for new club members, including social players and corporate teams, who were increasingly finding their way to the sport, Mr Hurley said.
