Several Cromwell residents were ''very upset'' to discover their vehicles and fences had been targeted in a series of spray-painted graffiti attacks carried out on Monday night or early Tuesday, police said.
Silver spray paint was used to write racist, homophobic and other offensive messages on at least seven vehicles, several fences, the Cromwell Swim Centre building and the town's skate park, Sergeant Simon Paget, of Cromwell said.
Three boys, aged 16, 15 and 12, were being questioned in connection with the incident.
''This is highly unusual for Cromwell and the car owners were very upset and quite distressed when they discovered it.
''Some nice cars ended up an absolute mess and the offending seemed quite indiscriminate,'' he said.
Cars and property in Barry Ave, Neplusultra, Leitrum and Syndic Sts were targeted.
''There's probably more out there that hasn't been reported to us, so we'd like to hear from anyone who had property damaged in this way, so we can get the whole picture.''
Sgt Paget said the boys being questioned were all from Cromwell. He reminded parents to keep an eye on what their children were up to, especially during the school holidays.
''Make sure you know what your young ones are up to, especially during the hours of darkness.
''If we find them out roaming around, we'll be asking them what they're doing.''
If the vehicles were insured, the insurance might cover removing the graffiti.
If not, people could contact police for some advice on how to remove the paint.
Police had sought advice on the matter from a vehicle paint and panel firm, he said.
