"To win the double is pretty amazing and to win both in the same year is even more rewarding," Allan Paterson said. He and son Simon run 3800 merinos and 800 halfbred ewes on their 2000ha property.
The Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand national fleece contest was hosted by the Maniototo A and P Association in Ranfurly and hundreds of people viewed the display of the top fleeces yesterday, along with demonstrations by spinners, weavers and shearers, followed by a fashion parade and the contest prizegiving last night.
The Patersons' top fine wool fleece scored 99 out of a possible 100, with their Romney fleece scoring 98 to win the strong-wool championship.
