Funding for water approved

Government funding to upgrade Roxburgh's water supply has been approved, but the news has yet to filter through to the Central Otago District Council.

Minister of Health Tony Ryall announced yesterday the Government had approved nearly $19 million of subsidies to improve community water supplies throughout the country.

The district council's plan to improve Roxburgh and Lake Roxburgh's water supply was one of 66 successful applications.

The amount of subsidy made available to specific communities was "commercially sensitive at this stage", Mr Ryall said, as communities would be seeking tenders for the various projects.

When approached by the Otago Daily Times for comment yesterday, Central Otago Mayor Malcolm Macpherson and council assets manager Murray Washington had yet to receive official confirmation of the funding.

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean was advised by Mr Ryall on Monday the Roxburgh proposal was successful.

A new treatment plant would be built at Roxburgh and water piped to Lake Roxburgh village. Almost 800 people would benefit from the improved water supply, Mrs Dean said.
