Fund-raiser hits all the right notes

St John Ambulance at Ranfurly stands to make just under $8000 to help with running expenses thanks to a hugely successful "Stars in their Eyes" evening held on Saturday night.

Organiser Val McSkimming said St John Ranfurly usually holds about four fund-raising events a year but the committee decided to do one main event this year and see how it went.

Ten contestants dressed and sang just like their idols and won the hearts of the audience which packed the Ranfurly Memorial Hall for the concert.

Gimmerburn farmer Malcolm Helm stole the show with his performance of In the Ghetto by Elvis Presley and the judges praised his actions and outfit as well.

Russell Sheppard tinkled the ivories at least as good as Winifred Attwell playing Black and White Rag to take second place.

Third place went to Alice Hore for her rendition of Dusty Springfield's Son of a Preacher man.

But the other seven performers were also loved by the audience who tapped along to Johnny Cash (Bruce Gardiner) singing Ring of Fire, Julie Andrews (Glenys Crutchley) The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music, John McDermott (Jim McCombie) Scotland the Brave, Willie Nelson (Paul Dougherty) You were always on my mind, Pavarotti (David McAtamney) Santa Lucia and Olivia Newton-John (Cheryl Smith) Hopelessly Devoted to You.

Mrs McSkimming said she was delighted with the way people got behind the show and helped out.

Two All Black training jerseys and a Hurricanes jersey signed by the team were auctioned and raised $1700 on the night.
