Constable Craig Bennett, of Roxburgh, said two or three taggers left their mark along the main street of the town 10 days ago.
The offenders had walked from Jedburgh St to 21 Scotland St, tagging 13 sites including sheds, garages and the church, using a green paint with a metallic fleck.
One of the tags was SKU or SKV, the second was HARM and the third, which he described as "distinctly female", was either JAH or JAN.
Const Bennett said the tagging stopped at 21 Scotland St and he believes the perpetrators could live north of that area.
He is asking parents to check their sheds to see if any paint is missing.
"The paint is not the kind that you would normally expect to find in the usual spray paint canisters and the three taggers have shared the paint," he said.
The fact that the tagging happened at the beginning of the school holidays was no coincidence, Const Bennett said.
One of the tags had East Coast written nearby and he is wondering if there are some young people holidaying in Roxburgh who could be responsible.
It was unusual to have tagging in Roxburgh and Const Bennett was keen to put an end to it.
"If the parties involved come forward and speak to me then help will be provided to sort this out," he said.
Police are also looking for information about an attempted arson at the Bridge Hotel on State Highway 8 near Millers Flat.
Attempts to set fire to the large wooden stage coach outside the tavern had been made last Sunday night.
"Someone had gone to great lengths to set the fires using twine, onion bags and paper stuffed in under the axles, but they were not successful, and with the number of vehicles and houses around the area it would have been very dangerous," Const Bennett said.
