Former Molyneux Park groundsman Richard McAlevey says he is pleased with the outcome of an Employment Relations Authority finding that he was unjustifiably dismissed.

The authority's decision, released earlier this week, awarded him more than $10,000 after it found his former employers, Molyneux Park Charitable Trust, had "significant deficiencies" in the dismissal process.

When contacted by the Otago Daily Times, Mr McAlevey said he was "quite pleased to have my work method and practices justified", but did not want to comment further.

Otago Polytechnic sports turf management programme manager Gary Smith has also spoken out about the decision, saying it was not just a good result for Mr McAlevey, but "for all turf managers in the industry.

"It's [Molyneux Park] a low-budget facility and didn't have the resources, to be honest. He was doing a good job but didn't have the resources or support ...the Queenstown Events Centre, for example, has four or five people in this [groundsman] position."

Mr McAlevey had worked as the turf manager at the park from August 2005 until November 2009.

During that time park trustees raised concerns about the condition of the pitch, as did New Zealand Cricket.

A New Zealand Cricket-issued warrant allowing the facility to host first-class cricket was withdrawn for the 2008-09 season.

When contacted by the Otago Daily Times, park trustee Mark Tait said the trust had "ceased operating" at the end of July 2010 but had not been dissolved.

He could not comment further as he had yet to meet the other trustees.

Since the trust had ceased, the Central Otago District Council had taken over the running of the park and had hired a maintenance contractor.

Andrew Douglas, of Alexandra, is the ground's turf manager and was described by Mr Smith as "young, fit and enthusiastic . . .he's going to be fantastic. It's a good outcome for Molyneux Park in the long term".
