Central Otago's 11th grade football team is flying high after going from being the underdog to winning its grade championships at Nelson yesterday.
In a prolonged shoot-out after drawing 2-2 at the final whistle, the Central Otago team beat Canterbury Red's top team for the medals and trophy.
There were 17 teams in the competition.
Coaches Peter Waters, from Arrowtown, and Grant Simpson, from Cromwell, said the boys did an "amazing" job.
"They were unbelievable against all the odds," Mr Waters said.
`There were between 500 and 700 people at the final and everyone was cheering for Canterbury except the kids' parents, and they still fought on and managed to win overall," he said.
Central Otago has two teams in the 11th grade and the development team heads off to Invercargill to play tomorrow in its competitions, which Mr Waters said it also stood a good chance of winning.
