Five people were injured when a car and motorhome collided on the Beaumont Highway yesterday afternoon.
The crash severely damaged both vehicles and left the contents of the motorhome strewn along the side of State Highway 8, about 5km from Lawrence towards the inland Otago town of Beaumont.
A witness said an inflatable boat the car was towing appeared unscathed.
St John spokeswoman Chrissy Hamilton said three people sustained moderate injuries and two others minor injuries in the crash about 2.30pm.
All were transported to Dunedin Hospital by two Otago Regional Rescue Helicopters, she said.
Crews from Lawrence, Waitahuna and Millers Flat responded.
Firefighters worked to free people trapped in both the motorhome and the car, he said. The road was closed for a time as emergency services responded but "it was all done and dusted by 5.30pm".
