Nine members of two families make up about a third of the band and they said the family connection gave a special dimension to their music.
The Dance family contributes six members of the band: grandparents Doug and Jean Dance, their son Daniel, their daughter Victoria Napier and their grandchildren Greer (14) and Jesse (16) Orchard — Mrs Napier’s son and daughter.
Greer, her mother and grandmother all play the tenor horn, Doug is on the B-flat bass and Daniel and Jesse are on percussion.
Mrs Wright said the band was looking forward to playing in Roxburgh this weekend, in a concert that was both a fundraiser for the band’s trip to the national championships in Wellington later this month and "a chance to show the community what we’re taking to Wellington with us".
It was a "big deal" for a band from such a small community to attend the nationals, she said.
The band will perform at the Roxburgh Entertainment Centre on Sunday at 2pm.
It will be conducted by John Buchanan, and feature guest artists Melle Steringa on clarinet and Sharon McLennan playing the piano.
