The number and value of building consents in Central Otago continues to grow, jumping almost 23% in number and 69% in value in a year.

In the 2016-17 financial year the Central Otago District Council issued 1038 building consents issued at a value of $197.5 million, a council spokesman said.

This was an increase in number of 22.9% and in value of 68.6% on the 2015-16 year, when 843 building consents worth $117 million were issued.

In the 2014-15 year, 770 consents worth $84.9 million were issued.

Council planning and environment manager Louise van der Voort said last year one of the main contributors to the increase in building consents was consents for dwellings.

A council spokesman said this week the number of residential dwelling consents continued to rise. Of the 2016-17 consents, 385 were for new dwellings, worth $144 million. This compared with 222 dwelling consents worth $78.5 million in 2015-16.

Council planning and environment committee chairman and hearings panel member Neil Gillespie said last year it was testament to council planning and building staff that they were keeping up with the consents.

More staff have been employed in both the building and planning departments.

Nine building control officers are employed by the council, four based in Cromwell, four in Alexandra and a team leader.

There are five staff in the planning team, a planning team leader, three planning officers and a consents officer.

During the 2016-17 year, 98.94% of consents were issued within the statutory time frame.
