Drink-driving disappoints police

Central Otago police are disappointed at the amount of drink-driving in the district.

Three men and a woman were processed for driving while intoxicated in Cromwell, Alexandra, Omakau, and Roxburgh between Friday night and yesterday morning.

Sergeant Ian Kerrisk, of Alexandra, said two people were caught by the rural drink-drive squad, while the others were processed by frontline police.

Sgt Kerrisk said it was particularly disappointing people continued to drive while drunk, given the recent media coverage about a district-wide traffic campaign which was being undertaken by the police.

The Central Otago campaign started on October 12 and is due to finish after Labour Weekend.

It is being run in conjunction with wider campaigns by officers throughout the police's Southern district.

"Our campaign is targeting drunk drivers as well as people committing other traffic offences," Sgt Kerrisk said.

"As well as local media coverage about the campaign, there has been national media coverage about drink-driving for years now, so it is disappointing to pick up locals who continue to be intoxicated while driving," he said.
