Volunteers in this weekend's "Shift that Silt" initiative are midway through another clean-up in Roxburgh following last weekend's flash floods.

More than 50 volunteers, including people from the Teviot Valley and elsewhere in Central Otago and some from Canterbury's Student Volunteer Army, are working in two shifts today to help shift remaining mud and silt from people's private properties.

Central Otago emergency management officer Matt Alley said it was hoped to complete the final clean-up of those residences today, but if there was more work to be done more volunteers would help tomorrow.

SH8 through Roxburgh reopened at 6pm yesterday but there is a 30km speed limit through the town.

At this stage the highway is expected to remain open until 6am on Monday, and then close for another few days to allow more roadworks to be done at five sites throughout Roxburgh.

Police are asking drivers to respect speed restrictions and traffic management measures.
