Wheels Up Community Bike Ambassadors course members took to the hills of Matangi Station near Alexandra last week.

It was courtesy of the Sanders family and Rotorua-based first aid trainers, Peak Safety Outdoor Safety and Emergency Management, which delivered the course free of charge.

Peak Safety trainer and bike enthusiast Charlie Lester-Rosson spent the day with the 18 people on the course, whose ages ranged from teenagers to 70-plus.

Central Otago District Council (CODC) road safety adviser and course co-ordinator Chris Foggin said, in a statement, he was thrilled to have Ms Lester-Rosson share her expertise.

"Not only is the course the first of its kind in the region but it is also being delivered by a local star on the trails up north.

"Charlie is one of their bike patrollers, so is a great fit for our group."

Up-Cycles Charitable Trust had bought cycle-friendly Nek Minute first aid kits from Peak Safety for the ambassadors, he said.

Mr Foggin had been running Wheels Up, a campaign to make the Central Otago community more road-safety savvy, since May.

Funded through NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi and initiated by the CODC, the campaign was intended to make roads safer for cyclists, drivers and horse riders.

Courses had been run for schools and members of the community including teachers.

Mr Foggin is keen to offer another three-day course with a new group in late October and early November.

Anyone interested in increasing their knowledge and love of biking could contact Mr Foggin at the CODC.
