The Central Otago Queenstown Trail Network Trust had favoured the construction of a suspension bridge, beside but lower than the Bannockburn bridge, Central Otago district councillors heard at their roading committee meeting this week.
However, a clip-on bridge was also being considered, council infrastructure services manager Julie Muir said.
Many councillors thought a clip-on at the level of the Bannockburn Bridge would be safer. They were worried cyclists would not travel down to the suspension bridge, and would instead cycle across the main bridge with other traffic.
Ms Muir said the costs of a clip-on bridge would still be "significant" - more than $800,000.
The council would fund about half of that and NZ Transport Agency the other half, she said.
However, deputy mayor Neil Gillespie said the cycle trust should pay for half the council's share. His motion to that effect was adopted by the council.
Council and trust representatives will now discuss the proposal and funding.
