The Central Otago District Council has issued $8000 in fines in less than two months from newly enforced parking restrictions, and the measures are here to stay.
The council introduced restricted parking zones in Alexandra and Cromwell in 2007, but only began issuing tickets on March 30 this year.
The zones were created at the request of businesses to ensure available parking for customers.
Council roading manager Murray Hasler said that, as of Friday, the council had issued about 200 tickets with total fines of $8000.
It would continue enforcing the rules through the winter, he said.
When the council began issuing tickets, infrastructure services manager Julie Muir said it was meant as a deterrent rather than a revenue-creating measure.
Mr Hasler said the parking officers appeared ''to be reducing the over-parking''.
In late April, Mr Hasler said there were three instances of residents being ticketed for parking outside their properties.
There had been similar complaints since, he said. ''Arrangements are being made with these residents as issues arise.''
Slightly more tickets were issued in Alexandra than in Cromwell.
