Council help needed with bridge

The Central Otago District Council (CODC) has been asked to help legalise an agreement with the Department of Conservation (Doc) to allow a bridge to built on the Patearoa Walkway.

The bridge would cross the Sow Burn to complete the walkway.

The Patearoa Ratepayers Association wants to finish the track but neither the Ratepayers Association nor the walkway committee is a legal entity and Doc will not sign a management agreement with them.

The council needs to sign the management agreement before the bridge can be built and Doc will inspect the bridge each year to ensure its safety.

CODC corporate services manager Heather Kinsey told the Maniototo Community Board yesterday the council would be not be adding the bridge to its assets register and would not be responsible for its replacement or depreciation.

Board members voted to approve the management agreement with Doc, subject to the insurance issue being resolved to the satisfaction of the CODC chief executive and a letter of agreement between the Patearoa Walkways committee and the CODC outlining their role in establishing the walkway bridge and ongoing maintenance.

Naseby road: The board voted to stop Ramor Rd in Naseby and transfer it to the owner of an adjoining property.

Recovery depot: The board discussed the placement of Naseby's resource recovery depot, which sits in the preservation corridor within the township's historic precinct.

Board members and staff will try to negotiate with the landowner who complained about the siting but it may be moved to the corner of Evans Lane and Oughter St, next to the tennis courts.
