After a confirmed sighting yesterday of an elderly man reported missing from Cromwell, police now believe the man is making his own way home to Auckland.

They were concerned about the wellbeing of John Alloway (70), who had been visiting Cromwell for several days for a tangi and had not been seen since early Tuesday morning.

He had a medical condition and his disappearance was out of character, Acting Detective Sergeant Alan Lee said.

Police had now received a sighting of him at Tarras on Tuesday and they believed he was travelling home, Acting Det Sgt Lee said today.

"The focus of our search has narrowed now, we're making inquiries around Christchurch, and we're pretty confident he's decided to head home, '' he said.
