Conditions outstanding for triathalon event — organiser

While overcast conditions may not have been everybody’s idea of a spectacular summer’s day, it was ideal weather for the 25th Lake Dunstan Triathlon, Duathlon and Kayak Multisport Race.

Organiser Bill Godsall said this was the second year yesterday’s race had been held at the "damn scenic" Bannockburn inlet.

About 130 people took part in the event — in line with previous turnouts.

The races on offer were a duathlon, a fun triathalon, a multisport kayak race, a sprint distance triathalon and an Olympic distance triathalon.

Mr Godsall said the weather and water conditions yesterday were outstanding for the event.

"Today is perfect — it’s nice and cloudy and so the heat’s not here."

A 30°C day would have been "murder".

Mr Godsall said it had "been a very popular event" and thought the longevity of the race had attracted athletes.

"There’s also less and less of these events being run because costs are through the roof."

Competitors ranged from those in their early teens right up to those in their 70s.

"Age doesn’t matter if you’re out there doing it," he said.

He thanked New World Cromwell for their sponsorship and the course marshals for keeping people safe.

Argentinian Valintino Agnelli won the men’s Olympic distance triathlon with a time of 1:48:57.

He said the Bannockburn course was hard but "super fun".

The Olympic distance triathlon was a 1.5km swim, 40km bike and a 10km run.

United States-based Agnelli who was training in Wānaka for the summer, said he only decided to compete the night before and signed up the morning of the race.

The hill climbs were particularly brutal, he said.

Christchurch girls Lucy Gredig, Abigail Junge and Elza Harrington placed second in the fun triathalon team event — a 200m swim, 20km bike and 3km run — in 42:17.

"The fun triathalon’s for younger triathletes — the ones that aren’t Olympians — to have a go and have some fun," Lucy said.

They girls met each other through running clubs in Christchurch and decided to have a go at the Bannockburn event while in Central Otago on holiday.

They competed last year and will definitely be back for more next year, Lucy said.
