Having a detour route named By Pass Rd near the entrance to Ranfurly is bad for the town's image, retiring Maniototo Community Board member Mike Summers says.

''By Pass Rd is a shocking sign to have as you come into Ranfurly; visitors must have a laugh about it,'' he said at his final board meeting last week.

''It's time to rename it, and I think we need help from the Central Otago District Council to look at it.

''The last thing we want people to do, is to use that as a shortcut and bypass the town. Here we are encouraging people to come and stay here and then we have a sign saying By Pass Rd as you get near the town.''

Mr Summers, who is stepping down at this election after serving five years as a board member, said the matter should be ''tidied up''.

There were four houses along the road, he said.

''Holy cats, I still can't believe we've got a sign like that as you go into town.''
