A third of the funds needed for the proposed $3 million Alexandra Community House have been donated in one lump sum.

Community house charitable trust chairwoman Bernie Lepper was delighted with the news the Central Lakes Trust had given $1 million to the project.

"We couldn't have hoped for a better start to our fundraising campaign, " she said yesterday.

Construction on the new facility should begin next year.

The building will be in the grounds of St Enoch's Church in the centre of Alexandra and it will accommodate 10-12 permanent tenants and up to 40 community groups or agencies on a casual basis.

Mrs Lepper said the grant was a positive way to start the fundraising for the building.

The community house trust had also applied for funds from the Otago Community Trust and would apply for a Lotteries Board community facilities grant.

The facility will replace the existing Church House building, which is the base for the Citizens Advice Bureau, Central Otago Women's Support Link and Central Otago Budget Advisory Services, among other social services.

The Living Options Charitable Trust has received $255,000 from the Central Lakes Trust for a residential facility in Alexandra that will provide a home environment for people with disabilities.

The Henderson Arts Trust was given $100,000 to restore Henderson House and six youth trusts in the region received a total of $205,000 towards their running costs.

The Lake Hawea Community Centre received a major grant of $700,000, to be used for an extension to the community hall and library.

The Lake Hawea community began fundraising for the 488sq m extension to the centre last year.

The extension will more than double the size of the existing 1991 building and houses a small library.

The Lake Hawea community has grown from about 300 residents, at the time the centre was built, to nearly 2000.
