What was described as ''a colossal electrical storm'' has hit Millers Flat, Ettrrick and Roxburgh in Central Otago.
The storm was accompanied by torrential rain and multiple lightning strikes.
The fire service and police have been called out to some flooding in the area.
The storm hit about 6pm, and power is understood to have been cut from some homes.
Police said there had been calls from the public about the storm.
A spokesman said they were in relation to surface flooding on the Ettrick-Raes Junction Rd near Ettrick.
Members of the public had informed police about flooding over a large stretch of road, covering 2km to 3 km.
Another person had told police about ``severe flooding'' between Ettrick and Roxburgh.
The Roxburgh fire brigade had turned out to ``deep flooding''.
Debris and flooding was reported on the road at 8pm, and police were asking drivers to drive to the conditions.
