Clampdown on boy racers

Police are clamping down on boy racers, determined to prevent them becoming a widespread problem.

In two days, police dealt with three different drivers performing unsafe manoeuvres on roads and reserves in Alexandra and Earnscleugh.

Sergeant Ian Kerrisk, of Alexandra, said a 12-year-old boy was found driving a car in the Earnscleugh Hall car park last Sunday.

He was with a 15-year-old Alexandra boy who owned the vehicle.

Residents called police about a driver doing burnouts in the car park.

"We were extremely concerned the 15-year-old had allowed a 12-year-old to drive his car. Given the 12-year-old's inexperience, the potential for him to endanger himself and others was high," Sgt Kerrisk said.

"Due to the 12-year-old's age, we are working with his family about what will happen," Sgt Kerrisk said.

Also on Sunday, police received reports of a Ford Falcon being driven at speed from Centennial Ave on to Brandon St, causing it to fish-tail down the road near a group of pedestrians.

Police arrested a 19-year-old Alexandra man and charged him with careless use of a vehicle as a result.

"He admitted he was showing off to friends, but that is un-acceptable," Sgt Kerrisk said.

On Monday, police arrested a 21-year-old Alexandra man and charged him with giving an unnecessary display of acceleration after receiving reports of another Ford Falcon travelling at speed through an intersection on to Brandon St.

The vehicle was impounded.

Both men are due to appear in the Alexandra District Court on July 29.

Sgt Kerrisk said Alexandra did not have a problem with boy racers, but police intended to take "a hard line in relation to that type of driving".
