Well-loved characters leapt off the page and into playgrounds throughout Cromwell’s education centres yesterday as part of a week-long festival of reading and writing.

The book character dress-up day was organised by Cromwell Kāhui Ako (Community of Learning), to round out its Literacy Week celebrations.

The organisation encompasses the town’s six early learning centres, two primary schools and Cromwell College.

Cromwell Primary School deputy principal Katharine Grigor said the week included reading challenges, writing competitions and book and author studies — all part of learning that classrooms engaged in this week.

"We have sports weeks that we celebrate, we have Māori Language Week ... so this is just our opportunity to really raise the awareness of reading and writing and literacy."

The main goal was to get pupils excited and eager to participate in activates.

Author talks were a particular favourite of the pupils.

They were visited by three New Zealand writers this week who spoke about what their job entailed.

Ms Grigor hoped they would inspire some young children to consider writing as a career.

"It’s just great getting kids talking about ... writing and wanting to be writers."
