Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean moved to allay fears yesterday about possible cuts in funding for playcentres.
Mrs Dean, who was in Roxburgh to celebrate the work of volunteers in the Teviot Valley, said she met representatives from the Roxburgh Playcentre to hear their concerns.
The Early Childhood Education Taskforce, established to give the Government independent advice about spending and learning support in the sector, has recommended the change.
Funding for playcentres may be reduced by up to 70%, if the recommendation is adopted.
"The Roxburgh Playcentre people are concerned about the task force recommendation and I said to them that it is only a recommendation, not a decision," Mrs Dean said.
"I've encouraged that group to make submissions on the recommendation and assured them their submissions will be listened to."
