Police are investigating after a car was discovered smashed into the Kokonga bridge in Central Otago.
A motorist conacted police after finding the burnt out car on the Kyeburn–Hyde Rd (State Highway 87) at Kokonga, 25km from Ranfurly, about 4.30am today.
Police said it appeared the crash happened earlier in the morning.
Police and a fire investigator were working to establish what happened and to locate the vehicle's occupants, who were not present when it was found.
The car was so badly damaged that investigators were unable to confirm its make or registration.
Police said the bridge remained closed this afternoon. Diversions were in place, adding approximately 15 minutes of extra travel time, and were well signposted.
Anyone with any information about the crash, or the vehicle, was asked to contact Alexandra police on (03) 440 2500, or their local police station.
Alternatively, information could be given anonymously via the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
