Repairs required to Roxburgh's bridge could cost about $700,000, Central Otago District (CODC) councillors have been told.

CODC infrastructure services manager Julie Muir said at Wednesday's council meeting an abutment repair was required to the Jedburgh Bridge, which crossed the Clutha River between the Roxburgh township and Roxburgh East.

The council had known for some time the repair was needed, but had delayed it while the bridge was assessed to see if it met the new government Vdam (vehicle dimensions and mass) regulations that were introduced in February this year and governed heavy vehicle size, weight and operation.

Opus International Consultants assessed both the Jedburgh and Millers Flat bridges. The work was funded by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).

The Jedburgh Bridge met the new government requirements, so now the abutment work would be done, Ms Muir said.

She said many people would not realise the cost involved in maintaining and repairing bridges.

There was no budget for the $700,000 Jedburgh repair at present, but the council would be eligible for an NZTA subsidy, she said.

Opus was now doing a detailed design for the repair, and more precise costings would then be done by the council's contractor, Fulton Hogan.

It was likely the work would be done at the end of the apple season next year, Ms Muir said.

In the meantime, a weight restriction and speed limit were in place at the Jedburgh Bridge to meet safety requirements.

The Opus review had shown no work was required on the Millers Flat bridge, Ms Muir said.
