Organisers of the Brass Monkey Rally may have to consider changing its name if the evolving pattern of warmer weather continues.

For the second year in a row motorcyclists had to deal with rain and mud, rather than ice and snow.

About 2000 riders from as far away as Auckland and a couple from Adelaide, South Australia, turned up for the 24-hour event at Oturehua.

Landowner Ken Gillespie said everyone seemed to have a great time.

A band played into the early hours of Sunday and the Koarse motocross riders showed their dare-devil skills until they could no longer see in the dark.

Apart from one incident, in which a woman was burned when petrol was thrown on a fire in a drum, the rally was considered a great success.

Mr Gillespie said everyone was very well behaved.

Alexandra police confirmed they had no arrests and no problems were reported.

The whole event proved to be exciting entertainment for Aucklander Dr Steve Calverley, who recently bought the land next door to Mr Gillespie.

Dr Calverley was serving coffee to the riders and Mr Gillespie said he was "just like a Japanese tourist" with his camera.

"He kept saying he had never seen anything like it in his life, and asked `do these men have wives and do they have children?"' Mr Gillespie said.
