Bonspiel unlikely this year

As the mercury begins to creep up in the Maniototo, hopes of a national bonspiel this winter are melting as quickly as lake ice.

Ken Gillespie, of Oturehua, said this week  chances were "not looking good" for a national curling tournament at the Idaburn Dam this season.

There was a decent frost on Sunday morning and the ground temperature  dropped to about -8.5degC, but on Monday a warm northwest wind blew through the valley, he said.

"The floods the other weekend wiped out the ice. We had about 4ft [1.2m] of water on top of the ice."

In years where bonspiels occurred, they would have usually been called by this time, he said.

"Although way in the past they were common in August, so these things change."

Naseby icemaster Jock Scott said a bonspiel was unlikely at its Centennial Ponds as temperatures became warmer.

"I don’t see us being able to catch up. We’ve had some super winter weather, but the ice faded today, as it was quite a lot warmer."

The Naseby Curling Council held the Baxter Cup competition on the ponds last weekend, which attracted 64 curlers. It was won by the Kyeburn club.

However, much more ice was needed for a national bonspiel to support the 37 teams which would play.

There were a few nights of decent frost throughout the winter, but more were needed consecutively, Mr Scott said.

"Curlers energise towards a bonspiel and go to lengths to make it happen, but you’ve also got to rely on the weather.

"I’m not going to stick my neck out and say we’re definitely not going to have a bonspiel. If we suddenly got some huge frosts it could turn around."

The last national bonspiel was held in Naseby in 2015. It was last held at its usual location, the larger Idaburn Dam in the Ida Valley, in 2012.
