A comprehensive scene search began today in and around the Roxburgh home where a woman was killed yesterday afternoon.

Head of the homicide inquiry, Detective Sergeant Derek Shaw, said a 66-year-old man remained in a serious condition today in the intensive care unit of the Dunedin Hospital.

The body of a 60-year-old woman, who died after a shooting incident, was still in the driveway at the scene until mid-afternoon today, when it was taken away to be examined by a pathologist.

"The comprehensive scene search is being conducted in an attempt to establish what exactly happened yesterday. We have established some theories about what we think may have happened but are seeking more witnesses, if anyone can help us, '' Det Sgt Shaw said.

The couple had been living at the Smith St house where the incident happened, he said.

A firearm was recovered yesterday, near the home.

"We're still keeping an open mind about whether anyone else was involved.''

They were well-respected members of the community and neither of them had previously come to the attention of the police, he said.

The home was still cordoned off today and about 20 police officers were working on the case, with Oamaru, Invercargill and Dunedin staff joining Central Otago police and forensic experts in the investigation.

Det Sgt Shaw said the scene examination would continue for several days. He was grateful to the residents of the street who had been so understanding about the disruption caused by the police barriers.

The names of the woman and the injured man have not yet been released.
