Before the event began it was blessed by Central Otago kaumatua Bill Houia, who spoke in Maori and English following the briefing for competitors.
Co-organiser Camille O’Connor said the blessing was included to incorporate a cultural element into the event. It was nice to include something "a little bit different" and show respect through the blessing, she said.
Almost 200 people took part in the run, which had 21km, 10km and 5km categories. The course skirted the McArthur Ridge Vineyard and at times went through rows of vines.
Organisers said they planned to continue holding it on the nearest weekend to Waitangi Day each year, and there was a "nice synergy" with other events on in Central Otago last weekend.
