Bannockburn will be invaded by bikers for the next week.

The third annual Bannockburn Bike Week started on Saturday and has attracted about 80 motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the country.

One of the organisers, Dave Moreton, of Bannockburn, said the ''low key'' week was a social one but focused on providing great rides for bikers as well as guest speakers on a wide range of motorcycle topics.

Many of those attending will travel to the Vincent County Motorcycle rally at Galloway, near Alexandra, this weekend.

''We aim at giving riders something to do between the Woodstock Rally [at Hokitika, on January 25-27] and the Vincent one, especially those who have travelled a long distance to get here,'' Mr Moreton said.

A ''Pushbikehana'' course was set up in a paddock next to the village's main street yesterday to entertain young cyclists. Motorcyclists tested their skills on the course later in the day.

''This year, we were lucky to get some extra funding from the Cromwell Community Board, so we've used some for events which cater for locals too, like the `Pushbikehana' course,'' Mr Moreton said.

A ride at Highlands Motorsport Park at Cromwell tomorrow would be one of the highlights of the week.
