Bike park delayed

Construction of the Cromwell Bike Park has been pushed back until at least next autumn, and possibly until this time next year or later.

Members of the bike park committee had hoped the park would be built ''by this time last year'', however, it had been postponed due to red tape and a lack of funding.

Committee secretary Vivienne Wilkinson said it had been a hard process fighting for the park, and gaining a lease for the site, next to the Cromwell squash courts, had taken ''a wee while''.

The committee had applied for funding but applications would not be considered until about February next year. Further applications were still to be made.

''We are still a long way off confirming how much money we will be getting,'' Mrs Wilkinson said.

The park project has an estimated price-tag of $400,000.

So far the committee had raised about $16,000, which included a $10,000 grant from the Cromwell Community Board.

More fundraising would take place over summer.

Cromwell Bike Park Committee member Gary Smith said the committee wanted to wait until it had all funding required so it could ''do it right'' as a single project.

He assured people the park was ''absolutely'' still going ahead.

When completed, it would include a jump park, BMX track, a paved learn-to-ride area, and pump tracks.

Members were also being sought by Mr Smith for Cromwell's first BMX club, which would hold race and training evenings at the bike park, when built, and continue maintenance and fundraising efforts.

Between eight and 10 people were required to form a committee for the club, he said.
