A festive crowd set up camp on the McNulty House lawn on Saturday for one of Cromwell’s highlights over the new year break.

The annual Cromwell Wine and Food festival drew a laid-back crowd of about 1000 as patrons enjoyed an afternoon of live music and a selection of local wine and food vendors.

The festival featured 10 wine stalls and eight food trucks.

Event organisers said due to the size of the area they were more than happy with the turnout which was more geared to families.

Organiser Barbara Emmitt said she noticed more of a younger representation compared with previous years.

"I’ve noticed more younger people this time than what I’ve seen in the past," she said.

"Obviously there’s lots of visitors from out of town, which is really good because that’s what it’s about."

It was a good opportunity for holidaymakers from outside the area to experience some of the smaller wineries, she said.

The event served as a fundraiser for the McNulty House refurbishment which will cost more than $700,000.
