The letter, drafted by Mr Cadogan, was sent to Prime Minister Bill English last week, and signed by him, Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher, Mackenzie Mayor Graham Smith, Southland Mayor Gary Tong, Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan and Gore Mayor Tracy Hicks.
It requested more funding for help with ''irresponsible'', messy campers and questioned the government's reluctance to instate a tourist levy.
A spokesman for Mrs Bennett said yesterday he expected the minister to write a response sometime this week.
Mr Cadogan said yesterday he received ''a lot of feedback'' from the community about the letter.
''I've had a significant number of people confused about why the Government doesn't support a levy.''
Many members of the community told stories of holidays they took where they were made to pay similar levies, he said.
Mr English replied on Tuesday , thanking the mayors for the letter, saying their concerns were ''noted''.
The letter was forwarded to Mrs Bennett.
Through a spokesman, she told the Otago Daily Times last week she was ''looking at how else the Government can support tourism infrastructure for those councils that are financially constrained''.
The mayors' letter said they were ''bending under the weight'' of the problems caused by ''mess and waste'' left by one group of travellers.
