An appeal has been lodged against a decision by the Central Otago District Council (CODC) allowing the Alexandra Kindergarten to build a new facility in the Alexandra Primary School grounds.
The application drew several submissions and three of the appellants, D.J. Fletcher, H. Winslow and W.T. Cooney, under the umbrella of the Smudge Family Trust, have appealed that decision.
Mr Fletcher had opposed having the kindergarten there and wanted it moved to another part of the school grounds, citing concerns about traffic safety and the removal of established trees.
Alexandra Kindergarten head teacher Jan Johnson said she was bitterly disappointed.
"The building is old and costing a lot for maintenance and [we are] looking forward to have new facility conducive to learning and teaching. It seems such pity that it's an ideal situation where transition to school can be fostered.
"Going back to the drawing board could be another two years and we will probably lose our funding,'' she said.
Environment Court case manager Chris Jordan said the case would first go to mediation and if nothing was resolved through that process, a hearing date would then be set.
