Alexandra's power supply restored

Electricity was cut in several streets in Alexandra about 6am yesterday, when a vehicle hit a transformer in Chicago St and knocked it off its concrete base on to the ground.

Power was restored quickly, as linesmen were able to back-feed from other transformers.

Delta operations manager Graeme Johnson said the transformer was one of two remaining that were built on a pedestal, and was due to be replaced with a ground-based model.

The other, in Spencer St, already had the mobile substation parked next to it, as work was to have started on its replacement today.

However, the Chicago St transformer will now be replaced first.

If it had to be repaired it could have cost $2000 to $3000, Mr Johnson said.
