Alexandra Volunteer Fire Brigade senior station officer Glen Gary said the occupant and co-owner of the cart reported seeing smoke coming from behind one of the vats as he heated up food in preparation for the night.

Witnesses reported seeing a "massive" ball of smoke and "really high" flames coming from the cart which was parked on Centennial Ave, near the town's museum and information centre.

Station officer Gary said the occupant was taken to Dunstan Hospital for a check up but was believed to be uninjured.

He said the cause of the fire should be known within a few days.
