Alexandra District Court

Police withdrew 20 charges against a Cromwell woman appearing before Judge Stephen O'Driscoll in the Alexandra District Court yesterday.

Deanna Mary Wallis (34), sickness beneficiary, had denied 22 charges that related to offending at Cromwell between August 11, 2008 and February 7 last year.

She faced nine charges of intentional damage, seven of harassment, four of threatening, one of burglary and one of offensive behaviour.

Prosecutor Sergeant Amelia Steel sought leave to withdraw 20 of the charges as Wallis had agreed to enter into a bond to keep the peace.

Remaining charges of burglary and threatening to kill were amended to intentional damage of a house, and misuse of a telephone.

Wallis admitted both amended charges.

Defence counsel Tim Cadogan said all the offending centred around a relationship Wallis had been in with Cromwell man Anthony John James, who was married at the time to Carleen Ann James.

When the affair turned sour, Wallis had difficulty dealing with it, Mr Cadogan said.

Mr James had also been convicted of assaulting Wallis, he said.

Mr and Mrs James were the complainants in relation to most of the initial 22 charges.

Sgt Steel said on August 31, 2008 Wallis went to Mr and Mrs James' house, which she found unoccupied at the time.

She used a kitchen knife to slash the couple's bed mattress and covers, as well as clothing.

Wallis also took the couple's dog from their home, but returned it the next day, Sgt Steel said.

On February 7 last year, Wallis rang Mr James' telephone, and when it was answered by Mrs James Wallis used threatening language towards her.

For both charges Wallis was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon in 12 months.

She was also ordered to pay reparation of $3415.

Fraud
For defrauding a fellow traveller of $1774.93, a 23-year-old Chilean woman was fined $500 and made to pay the amount owing in full.

Karla Constanza Musso, fruit-picker, of Roxburgh East, admitted 13 charges of dishonestly using a credit card at Mount Maunganui and Opotiki between December 17 and 22 last year.

She had taken the credit card from a fellow Chilean also working in New Zealand.

Musso used the credit card to purchase clothing, alcohol, groceries, and internet access.

She was convicted of each charge, made to pay reparation of $1774.93 immediately, fined $500, and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Final warning
For breaching conditions of bail, an Alexandra man was given a final warning and told jail was the likely outcome if he breached conditions again.

Lucas George Attfield (20), employed, was remanded on continued bail by Judge O'Driscoll in the Alexandra court on Wednesday.

Conditions of his bail included an order for him not to consume alcohol.

Hours after appearing in court, Attfield was found by police and failed an alcohol breath test.

He was held in custody overnight and appeared before Judge O'Driscoll yesterday.

Prosecutor Sergeant Ian Collin said when found by police at 9.20pm on Wednesday, Attfield smelled of alcohol and was slurring his words, prompting officers to initiate the breath test.

It was Attfield's third breach of bail conditions since he was first remanded on bail in September last year, for 22 mostly drug-related charges.

Attfield is due to be sentenced in the High Court at Dunedin on March 11.

The offending, which he admitted, related to instances at Alexandra and Cromwell between December 4, 2008, and September 22 last year.

Judge O'Driscoll further remanded Attfield on bail to March 11, with the same terms and conditions.
