Accommodation in Cromwell 'difficult'

Otago Polytechnic's Cromwell campus has joined a growing chorus of concern about Central Otago's housing troubles.

Central campus manager Kelly Gay confirmed there was a wait list for accommodation for 2020.

"We're probably over capacity by 30% to 40% already and I'm expecting that to grow."

"Accommodation in Cromwell is difficult and we know that."

The demand for accommodation has prompted the campus to expand its existing accommodation space, he said.

The accommodation facility, comprising five five-bedroom units at present, has capacity for 25 students.

Central campus has also shifted its outdoor adventure programme to Wanaka, partially due to the lack of accommodation in Cromwell, Mr Gay said.

"As a community we have a problem with accommodation, we don't have enough, and it's not getting resolved very quickly either.

Mr Gay said he had spoken to a number of people in seasonal work who also had struggled with the issue.

"If we want to grow, we're going to have to provide accommodation with that - accommodation and educational growth for our campus are strongly linked."
